2007 Chateau La Tour Blanche

Sauternes, southeast of Bordeaux, is best known for its sweet dessert wine. It is of such importance that it was included in the Bordeaux Classification in 1855. The most expensive wine ever sold in history was a Sauternes white wine. What about the second most expensive wine ever sold in history? Also a wine from Sauternes (both from Chateau d’Yquem). These facts should be able to signify how important this wine region is.

The dominant grapes in this region are mainly Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Semillon as the most dominant grape variety in this region is prone to noble rot and cause the grape to loose its water content from evaporation and allows the sugar concentration within the grape increases greatly. Sauvignon Blanc, on the hand, plays a role to provide the acidity to balance with the intense sweetness.

This Chateau La Tour Blanche is a Premier Cru of Sauternes district. It is gold colored, medium in color depth. When I first nose this wine, I had the smell of rubber balloons and bubbles. I also had some peachy and honey aromas but the bubbles and balloons are the first things popped into my mind. The taste of it is …..sweet(duh~~).  On the palate, it has some light acidity along with the syrupy sweet fruit and honey flavor. Medium bodied with a long finish of residue sugar sweetness.

DWA rating: 8/10…………Highly Recommended. Must Try.

Pairing note:

I tried to pair this with cheesecake and strawberry ice cream (trying to make a romantic finishing touch with the wife). Turns out to be a VERY BAD IDEA~~~!!! The wine is so much sweeter than the dessert, it made the cheesecake and ice cream seemed dull. Therefore, for the pairing of dessert wine and dessert, the dessert itself has got to hold its own weight.
